      Out of stock

Hobby Master 1/48 Air Power Series HA8603: Hawker Hurricane Mk.I GN-A, flown by F/L James B Nicolson, 249 Sqn. England 1940. Production of only 600 pieces.

On August 16, 1940 over the Southampton region Flt.Lt. James Nicolson was part of Red Flight when they encountered three Bf-110s that they attacked but in turn were attacked by three Bf-109s. Nicolson’s aircraft was hit four times wounding him and setting his fuel ablaze. In spite of the fire Nicolson managed to shoot down an enemy aircraft before bailing out. On his decent he was mistakenly shot by Defense Volunteers but managed to survive. For his bravery he became the sole Fighter Command recipient of the Victoria Cross.

The Hawker Hurricane was the first British single-engine monoplane fighter and the first single wing aircraft with retractable landing gear as well as an enclosed cockpit and 8 machine guns. The Hurricane went into operational service in December 1937 with the RAF 111 Squadron. The Hurricane is usually over looked as a major player in the BoB because of the Spitfire but 80% of the 1,792 German aircraft shot down were because of the Hurricane. There were 14,533 Hurricanes produced in all variants.
